Korat History
In Thailand, this cat also is called the Si-Sawat. The name Korat refers to the province in northern Thailand from where it originated. This breed is referred to in the Cat Book of Poems from the Ayudhaya Kingdom (1350-1767), in which it is described as having "smooth hairs with tips like clouds and roots like silver and eyes that shine like dewdrops on a lotus leaf". This cat was first seen in the West in 1896, and was imported to the United States in 1959. This cat is considered to be indicative of good luck in Thailand, with its silver color denoting wealth, and its eyes the color of young rice denoting good crops. A pair of Korat's given to a bride ensures a good marriage.
