Cats, The Purrfect Pet For Everyone
Turn on the television, open a magazine and you are likely to see an elegant cat helping to sell products. While it is expected to see a cat in a cat food commercial, they do appear in many unlikely places - commercials for cars, tissues, cosmetics, soaps, household products, and the list goes on.
Many of the stars are glamorous and luxuriously coated white Persians, others could be your cat or mine. Some simply lounge on a set, others perform. Watching the cats in television advertisements demonstrates that it is possible to get cats to perform certain actions although they are rarely prepared to lose their grace and dignity.
Some cats have made quite a career in advertising, many having been adopted from welfare shelters, becoming classic Hollywood "rags to riches" stories, travelling the country on promotions, well cared for by personal attendants and loved by millions.
Even those people who do not own cats can usually recognise and admire the gracefulness of the cat. Cat owners usually own their cat for its companionship but may admire a certain colour or breed and select their individual cat on its appearance or color.
Cats are one of the most adaptable of pets, often coping better than dogs with being left alone while the household is at work, not requiring their owners to participate in their exercise and demanding "walkies" when you would rather just have a night at home. Cats can quickly learn the rules of the household without having to attend obedience schools. Who said dogs were smarter than cats!
The gentle nature and the light body weight of cats make them an easy to manage pet for the elderly and infirm and many nursing homes find cats to be ideal pets as therapy for they are able to gently jump on beds and knees for a cuddle and don't require lifting.
Cats are also the preferred pet for younger, single women or working couples due to their ability to adjust to longer periods spent alone than most dogs. Cats spend the majority of each 24 hours sleeping, in short "cat-naps", so the owner's absence is not as distressing.
Pet shops carry a large range of cat toys to keep cats exercised and amused. Some toys are ideal for the cat left alone during the day and others are for the cat and owner to play with and enjoy together.
There are very few households where a cat could not make itself right at home. They ask only that they receive food, care and love and attention but being true creatures of comfort, they will not object to the best place in front of the heater or snuggling up under the blankets on a cold night.
