Sokoke Cat Breed
Body Size - Medium
Coat Length - Short
Sokoke Description
The Sokoke is a long-legged breed with a cheetah-like gait. The coat is short and silky with no undercoat. The pattern should resemble that of an ocelot, with bars on the face and forelimbs, rings on the tail, and a blotched tabby pattern on the sides. The base color is sandy brown, and the patterning varies in color from light brown to almost black.
Sokoke History
The Sokoke originates from the Sokoke Arabuke rainforest in Kenya. In 1978, a Kenyan farmer, Jeni Slater, found a litter of cats with this coat and pattern markings. A breeding pair was taken to Denmark by Gloria Moeldrup. This is a very rare breed, with about 20 breeding individuals in Denmark, one in Italy, and three in The Netherlands.
Sokoke Traits
The Sokoke is very people-oriented. It is a vocal cat.
Sokoke Health
The Sokoke cats have not been hardy in the Danish climate, perhaps because their coat does not provide protection.
