Getting Ready For Your Xmas Kitten

Planning on getting a cute kitten this xmas? Before you take home that irresistible kitten, here are a few easy steps to get yourself cat-ready.

Indoor Cat Room
Set aside a room or area in the house where the kitten can play. It's a good idea to clear a shelf in a bookcase or windowsill, as cats like to climb.

Kitten Dining Area
Set aside an eating area where the kitten will be protected from other animals and bad weather. Ensure the kitten has access to clean, fresh water at all times.

Your Kittens Bedroom
Decide where your kitten will sleep and prepare the area with blankets, litter tray, newspaper, a box etc., for warmth and comfort.

Kitten Toys
Make a few kitten toys such as a 'bungee mouse' that hangs on an elasticized string, a woolen pom-pom or a house from a cardboard box to help entertain and stimulate the kitten.

Kitten Proofing the Garden
Ensure the garden is safe with no problem spots where a curious kitten may get trapped. This includes removing dangerous objects in the garden such as wire or old timber planks with nails; mending holes in fences or gates to keep larger animals out; ensuring poisons such as rat or snail bait are not accessible.

Introducing a kitten To Your Family
Caring for a pet is a unique experience and an important part of growing up. Through cats, children learn about true commitment, patience and caring in a feel-good relationship.

However, children need to be taught how to care and take responsibility for their cats' welfare. Ideally children should be introduced to these concepts before the kitten is brought home.

Following the steps is a great way to introduce children to the responsibilities of cat ownership. A few other simple activities for children are:
Books There are lots of children's books that depict children looking after their kittens and cats.
Feeding/chores roster Set up a roster that clearly identifies who is responsible for tasks such as feeding, cleaning out the kitty litter, ensuring clean and full water bowls and grooming (if required).

Cats are a commitment that families will find both joy and lessons in.
